Spain has become the second country to win a world cup in the women’s and men’s edition beating England 1-0 in Australia.
After a Women’s World Cup full of excitement and great matches all came down to this match. England, one of the favorites since the beginning of the competition to win the title, and Spain which had one of the strongest teams.
England came with more favoritism to win this match, since on their way to claiming the 2022 Euros they managed to beat Spain. However, this time around La Roja wasn’t going to put things that easy for them.
The final was disputed in Sydney, one of the biggest cities in Australia.
From the beginning of the match, the Spaniards managed to control the possession of the ball. This wasn’t enough to stop the Lionesses who almost took the lead but the shot banged into the crossbar. Spain responded very quickly creating many clear chances themself as well. After some attempts, Olga Carnona scored and gave the lead to La Rojas (29′). Spain continued to dominate the game during the following minutes until the end of the first half.
Sarina Wiegman tried changing things for the second half but it wasn’t enough to stop Spain’s control over the game.
Jennifer Hermoso had an opportunity to extend their lead from the spot after a long VAR revision. However, things wouldn’t go to plan since the Lionesses’ goalkeeper, Mary Earps, stopped the shot. Even with this save from her teammate, the English weren’t able to find the back of the net to tie the game.
Spain lifted the trophy and became the new Champions of the World.
Terrible post-match news
Olga Carnona had to hear some devastating news right after the end of the match. Sadly his father passed away hours after she made the goal. Not many details are known yet about the death.
The Final Whistles’ family wishes the best to her and her family.
Why do you think this Spanish team was so successful in this World Cup?
