Chelsea eliminate Dortmund from the Champions League

Chelsea ended Dormunt’s perfect wining streak of 10 games and 10 victories in 2023 with a 2-0 defeat to classify for the next round of the Champions League.

Chelsea came into this game knowing the needed to win by a two goal difference to pass to the next round. In the first leg Dormunt won 1-0 in a game that was mostly dominated by them. This time around things changed.

The Germans, whom arrived late to the match, faced a Chelsea very aggressive. They lost one Julian Brandt just 3 minutes into the game. The English club knew exactly what the had to do so they did it form start to end. After many attempts they were able to convert the first goal thanks to Raheem Sterling (43′). One of the clearest chances Dormunt had was with Marco Reus’ free-kick, which was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The second half came around and Borussia Dortmund were still been surpassed by their opposition. Chelsea were conceded a penalty after the VAR revised a play due to a handball of Marius Wolf. Havertz was the one who took the shot. In his first attempt he missed, but he was given a second chance after the VAR caught several Dormunt players over the line before the penalty. In his second attempt he managed to score. This gave the partial pass to the next round. The Germans tried to regain control of the match, however it was too late.

This is great news for Graham Potter since he and Chelsea have had a very rough season. They currently sit in 10th in the Premier League, but that didn’t stopped them tonight.
