After a very intense final series, Licey won the 7th game and with it their 24th crown as national champions of the Dominican Republic.

Los Tigres del Licey celebrating their 24th national champions title against Las Estrellas Orientales

Los Tigres del Licey, qualified as the worst team of the Round Robin proved everyone wrong. They started the season with a mid-table team but quickly started to show everyone what the current National and Caribbean champions were capable of.

Against all odds, they managed to get the second spot in the finals next to Las Estrellas Orientales. This meant that the same showdown of last year’s finals was going to be repeated.

Last year, Licey won the championship against the Estrellas. This year the Estrellas wanted revenge. They started very well winning the two first matches of the final series. However, El Equipo Azul quickly recovered and won the three following games.

The 6th game took place in the Quisqueya Stadium and many thought it was going to be the last one. Yet the Estrellas had other plans in mind. They won the game and forced a 7th one with the hopes of winning it.

During this 7th, Las Estrellas had the home advantage at the Tetelo Vargas Stadium. Regardless, this wasn’t enough to stop the most winning team of the Dominican Republic, which won the game (4-3) and with it the Championships for the second year in a row.

This 24th title also means they get the ticket to Miami to play in the Caribbean Series. They will be looking to defend their title from last year’s edition.

Are Licey going to be able to defend their Caribbean Champions title this February?
