Indonesia have been removed as U-20 World Cup host
Indonesia has been removed as the Under 20 World Cup 2023 and might be facing sanctions from FIFA as a result.
On Wednesday, FIFA removed Indonesia after the Football federation of Indonesia (PSSI) cancelled the draw for the tournament. This came as a result of the fact that the governor of Bali refused to host Israel’s team.
Bali are mostly Hindu. With religion and political problems between both parts, many people didn’t want to see Israel compete in their stadiums.
Thanks to this, FIFA has released a statement where it said: “FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023, a new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against the PSSI may also be decided at a later stage.”
This wouldn’t be the first time the PSSI receives a sanction. The last time it affected a lot the growth football had in the country. The deputy PSSI chief stated: “FIFA decided Indonesia didn’t follow through with its earlier commitments while bidding.” He hopes no sanctions are implemented on them.
Another big question that was brought was regarding that FIFA had promise to aide the sport in this area, but they have stated that: “Members of the FIFA team will continue to be present in Indonesia in the coming months and will provide the required assistance to the PSSI, under the leadership of President Thohir,”.
