FC Barcelona are back to being La Liga champions
After 4 years without winning, FC Barcelona have once again become La Liga Champions after their win 4-2 over Espanyol.
After one of the most impressive La Liga campaign in several seasons, Barcelona have won their 27th La Liga title. The last time they lifted the cup was in 2019. They won it thanks to their 4-2 victory in the Catalan derby against Espanyol.
On the other hand, Espanyol aren’t having a great season. They are currently fighting relegation and need 4 more points in order to stay in the league. With 4 matches still to go, they are going to give it everything before the season ends.
FC Barcelona came into this match with 5 days off since their last game and the rest really paid off. With few minutes into the game, Robert Lewandowski opened the scoreboard and from there it was a complete festival for Barca. It wasn’t until the fourth goal that the Blaugrana took the foot off the gas and Espanyol took advantage of this. They managed to score two goals before the match was over.
Xavi’s incredible La Liga season
This is Xavi’s first full season with the team. After a very disappointing European campaign, the club focused all of its attention on La Liga. Xavi solidified Barcelona’s defense having conceded 13 goals in 34 matches.
Xavi has become the fifth person to win a La Liga title with FC Barcelona as a player and as a manager. Joining:
- Josep Samitier
- Johan Cruyff
- Pep Guardiola
- Luis Enrique
This is his first league title with the team and many more are expected in the coming years.
Robert Lewandowski
Lewandowski came this season from Bayern Munich to help Barca’s attack and he has done so. So far he has 21 La Liga goals and is first in the race for Pichichi followed by Karim Benzema with 17.
Xavi wanted Robert on the team to improve the attacking power of the team, but also to bring experience to it.
This has become the eighth straight season Lewandowski has scored 20 or more goals. A great and outstanding performance from the player.
Incident during celebration
As FC Barcelona players celebrated in the field their title, Espanyol fans weren’t happy at all. While the entire team and the directors jumped and signed in the middle of the field, Espanyol’s fans invaded the pitch and forced the players into the tunnel. The situation was quickly handled by the stewards and the police, but it’s something that could have ended very badly.
The rivalry between these two Catalan teams has always been very intense. With the current situation their club is undergoing, the fans weren’t happy to see their rivals celebrate the title.
