Sevilla wins their seventh UEL final at Budapest
Sevilla wins their seventh UEL final against José Mourinho’s Roma 4-1 on penalties after both teams tied 1-1 on regular and extra time.
Sevilla, the Europa League’s top winner came to this match looking to win the 7th. They have never lost a single Final in this competition. On the other hand, we have Roma who hadn’t been to a European Final in this century until last year and let alone had won one (which they did last year). Now they are in their second one, back-to-back. As well, their manager José Mourinho had never lost a European final.
Both teams had a lot to prove at Budapest since they didn’t have the best of seasons and the match was quite the spectacle. It was also a painting show as yellow cards flew around.
During the first half, Roma started controlling the game and managed to open the scoreboard thanks to Paulo Dybala (34′). However, everything changed in the second half as José Luis Mendilibar’s side managed to take control of the game. They forced an own goal from Gianluca Mancini which tied the game (55′). This was the first-ever goal scored to a Mourinho’s side in a European Final.
Even though Sevilla continued to dominate the game they were unable to score. Roma had the last chance before the penalties but it hit the crossbar and the score remained the same (1-1).
On the penalties, Sevilla shooter first. Both teams scored the first shot. However, in the second one, Mancini couldn’t revindicate himself and Yassine Bono stopped it with his legs. On the third shot, the story repeated itself and Roger Ibañez missed his shot leaving it all to Gonzalo Montiel to score the winning penalty, just as he did for Argentina in the World Cup final. The first shot he took was saved, but Rui Patricio came off his line before the ball was shot, therefore the penalty was retaken. This time around Montiel delivered and won the Europa League Trophy for his team.
Winning their seventh Europa League title UEFA should strongly consider renaming it Sevilla’s League.
