Alejandro “Papu” Gomez comes from a very successful season where he won the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina and the UEFA Europa League with Sevilla. Sadly, things have gone south ever since.

On September 1, Papu Gomez and Sevilla decided to terminate their contract. Being a free agent, the player joined the Italian club Monza around three weeks ago. Now, this same team that took him was the one to announce the news.

Terbutaline was found during the test. This drug is commonly used to calm a bronchospasm crisis. The test was done in October 2022, while he was still a Sevilla player and before the World Cup.

Due to this, there will be other repercussions, Papu Gomez will lose his World Cup Champion medal and his Europa League medal.

Only having two appearances with Monza, this is a massive step back in his career. Above all, with 35 years already the possibility of seeing Gomez play at a high level is slim with the 2-year ban.

This is not new news for Serie A since Gomez is the second player involved in a failed doping test this season. Juventus midfielder, Paul Pogba tested positive for testosterone and was suspended as well.
