Super League has the green light from the European Union’s court
The European Union’s top court has ruled that UEFA’s and FIFA’s ban on creating the Super League is an illegal practice.
UEFA and FIFA have suffered a huge blow in their attempt to shut down the Super League. The European Union’s top court stated that UEFA has been “abusing a dominant position” in controlling European football.
The court found that organizing football competitions is an economic activity and “therefore must comply with the competition rules and respect the freedom of movement.”
It was clarified that this sentence wasn’t a specific approval of the Super League or any other competition, it’s more a verdict on FIFA’s and UEFA’s rules in general. They want to dismantle the monopoly they have created around football in Europe.
Bernd Reichart, A22 Sports CEO said. “UEFA’s monopoly is over. Football is free. Now the clubs won’t suffer threats and punishments. They’re free to decide their own future.”
UEFA released a statement clarifying that they’ve updated their rules following the ruling. They won’t sanction any clubs or players if they participate in the Super League.
Beginnings
The Super League idea started on April 18, 2021, with 12 founding teams: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus. Its goal is to replace the UEFA Champions League with a “better competition” for everyone.
In that same year, the legal battle started when Barca filed a lawsuit due to alleged sanctions from UEFA. Since that moment, a lot of controversy around the competition has been raised with many teams leaving their place as founders. As well, many fans don’t like the idea of the competition since it will mean many big teams will always be involved.
At the moment only two founding teams remain at the head of the project, Barca and Madrid.
After the sentence
After the court gave its verdict many teams and leagues expressed their opposition to the project, between them some of the ex-founding teams. Some of these teams are: Man United, Man City, Bayern, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Sevilla BVB, Inter, Roma, AS Monaco, Girona, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord, Chelsea, and Tottenham. Also, some leagues that have stated their discontent are: The Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A.
With the only clubs backing the project, Barca and Real Madrid, A22 Sport have also stated their support.
