VAR discussions are going to be public in LaLiga starting 2024

LaLiga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF) have agreed to share VAR discussions starting on Jan 10, 2024.

Referee in spain looking at the VAR monitor to decide if his call was right or not

This season has been full of criticism against referees and VAR, especially in Spain. In almost every league game day so far there has been at least one play full of controversy.

After the introduction of VAR, many thought controversial plays like the ones we are seeing were going to end, however, it’s been the complete opposite. Since they have this technology people expect the calls to be better all the time. Sadly, this hasn’t been the case and many teams have been suffering.

LaLiga and the RFEF have sat down and decided the way they want to follow to help solve this problem. Starting on January 10, 2024, after each game day, the discussions between the officials are going to be public. We will start to see this on the Supercopa de España and will be introduced to LaLiga on January 12, 2024.

Nonetheless, they will only be publishing discussions between officials when an incident has been reviewed using the pitchside monitor.

With this, they look to be more “transparent” in the referring process, while also looking for a better understanding of the decision taken.

“In the next few days, the RFEF and LaLiga will publish more information and educational materials on social media to help fans and the media understand how this new dynamic will work.”

The relationship between the RFEF and LaLiga has improved after Luis Rubiales’ exit. This has helped to easily resolve situations like this one.

Do you think this will help to understand referees’ decisions in Spanish football?
