Liberty Media, the owners of the Formula One industry, will be taking over MotoGP as said by MotoGP in a statement.
Liberty Media is a USA-based company that back in 2017 took over the Formula One industry. After this F1 has become one of the top watched sports in the world.
This Monday, MotoGP announced that Liberty Media will acquire 86% of Dorna, MotoGP’s parent company, in other words, Dorna will maintain 14% of the stakes. They valued the world pinnacle of motorcycle racing at €4.2 billion ($4.53 billion). However, not many big changes are coming, at least not from the beginning.
The USA-based company announced that Dorna will continue to run independently maintaining their operation site in Madrid. Above all, Dorna’s current CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, will continue in his position even after the takeover is completed.
However, there’s a key problem that might surface in the future. In 2006 CVC Capital, previous F1 owners, had to sell Dorna to be cleared by the European Commission to buy F1. Therefore, If the same logic is applied, the European Commission will have something to say about this takeover.
Is this takeover going to benefit and make MotoGP grow as it did for Formula One up to this day?
