Bundesliga champions won with ease their second DFB Pokal trophy. From the beginning, Leverkusen controlled the pace of the match. It quickly paid off after Granit Xhaka, with a 20-meter strike, gave the lead to Xabi Alonso’s side (16′). In the 44th minute, they lost a player due to a red card. However, they continued to control the game.

The early goal gave the victory to Bayer Leverkusen ending the almost perfect season. They won the Bundesliga unbeaten and their only season loss came on Wednesday against Atalanta in the Europa League final.

This season will go down in the history books, becoming the first German club to win the Bundesliga unbeaten, record-breaking 51 games unbeaten across all competitions, and their first domestic double.

In the end, to win like that meant we showed spirit, we fought for the fans, for the club,” Alonso said. “It is huge success to win the double. We will remember this in the future.”

The last time Leverkusen won the German Cup was in 1993. The wait for silverware was long, but the club has finally achieved it this year. The match at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, the stadium set to host the Euro 2024 final, sealed the season for Xabi’s side.
