Charles Leclerc wins his home race, the Monaco GP
Charles Leclerc wins the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday and becomes the first Monégasque to win at home, at Monaco.
The Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, led the Monaco GP from start to finish in what’s been the most “boring” race of the season. The only real action came in the opening lap of the race.
An outstanding qualifying lap on Saturday saw Leclerc win the Pole position like he did in 2021. However this time, it was redemption time.
On Sunday, the race began and with it the incidents. A risky and “unnecessary” overtake by Kevin Magnussen made Sergio Perez lose control and took out Nico Hulkenberg in the way. Perez’s car ended up destroyed and all three drivers had to DNF. The red flags came moments after.
A couple of turns past that point, Esteban Ocon, with a very aggressive attempt to overtake his teammate, Pierre Gasly, flung into the air and damaged the floor of his car. Luckily for both, this happened right before the red flag and they went straight to the garage. Ocon’s car wasn’t able to rejoin the race in the restart.
Nevertheless, just like the action started it ended. After those two first incidents, the race went very straightforward. The top 10 drivers finished in the same position they started meaning Leclerc won the race and was followed by Oscar Piastri (P2) and Carlos Sainz (P3).
This is Charles’ first win since the Austrian GP in 2022 and it means he now sits 31 points away from Max Verstappen in the drivers Championship. On the other hand, this is Verstappen’s worst finish since the 2022 Sao Paulo GP.
Is Max Verstappen’s dominance over?
