Australian GP: chaos, drama, and collisions
Max Verstappen takes his second victory of the season after a very chaotic Australian GP we had this Sunday.
The world champion, Verstappen, is currently leading the world championship and this win extended his lead. He managed to survive one of the most dramatic races we’ve seen in a long time. Only 12 cars were able to end the 58 laps after two restarts at Melbourne.
Charles Leclerc’s collision brought out the first safety car of the race. A few laps later Alex Albon found himself in the wall as he was pushing the limits of his Williams. This brought the first red flag of many to come.
The race resumed and everyone took the free pitstop with the intention of ending the race with the hard tiers. On the 10th lap, Lewis Hamilton forced everyone to slow down during the safty car and this almost caused another big collision.
Fast foward into the 18th lap, George Russell suffered an engine failure, but managed to stop his car right after the pit exit. Only a Virtual safty car was deployed and the race quickly resumed.
The Australian GP continued with normalty until on the 54th lap Kevin Magnussen contacted the wall and debry came fling out of his rear wheel. This caused the second red flag of the race with two laps still to go. The race resumed with a standing start, but little did anyone know what was comming.
The two first corners became a death zone. Carlos Sainz clashed into Fernando Alonso making Fernando end at the back. Nyck de Vries and Logan Sargent went out in turne 1 and had tu retire. The two Apine took each other out, caused another red flag and had to retire. Since theree weren’t enough laps left to resume the race, it ended behind the safty car. The order was restablish to the one of the second restart since the cars didn’t pass the first sector before the red flag.
Sainz recived a five second penalty and this caused him to end in 12th place. Thanks to this Lance Stroll finished 4th and Sergio Perez 5th (who started the race in 20th). Nico Hulkernberg had an outstanding race and ended 7th. Oscard Piastri got his first points in formula 1 finishing 8th.
Alonso took 3rd, Hamilton 2nd and Verstappen 1st, with Perez as diver of the day and the fastest lap as well.
