Xabi Alonso will stay as coach at Bayer Leverkusen
Xabi Alonso has decided to remain Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach for at least the upcoming season he announced this Friday.
Bayer Leverkusen, alongside Xabi Alonso, is having the best season in the club’s history. They are still unbeaten across all competitions and sit with a comfortable 10-point lead over Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race. They are also in the German Cup’s semifinals and the Europa League’s quarterfinals.
With bigger clubs after him like Liverpool and Bayern Munich (and Real Madrid, before Carlo Ancelotti announced his contract extension), Xabi has decided to stay. This is an unusual move knowing opportunities like this don’t come around that often. However, he has decided that the current project he is working on at Leverkusen deserves at least another year of his hard work.
“I wanted to use that time of international break to reflect a little bit better and to take a decision … When I informed them that my decision to continue being coach of Bayer Leverkusen … this is the right place to be to develop as a coach. I’m a young coach but I have to feel it and right now I feel like this is the right place.”
This is Xabi’s first full season as a big-shot manager and if everything keeps its course the 31-year wait for silverware will finally be over for Bayer’s fans.
