Napoli has been crowned Italy’s champion with 5 matches still to be played. They faced Udinese today with the second opportunity of the season to become champions. The first opportunity came in their previous game where they needed to win against Salernitana to claim the title. They couldn’t achieve it and only managed to tie.

The story changed for today’s match as they only needed a tie to win it. They started losing the game, but at the beginning of the second half, Osimben tied the game. This result gave them the chance to be named Serie A champions once again.

This away match gathered 11,000 Napoli fans at the stadium, 5,000 more outside, and 50,000 watched from the jumbo screen that was placed at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. They were all anxious to see their team finally becoming champions. Fans flooded the field once the game was over to celebrate.

Season highlights

Napoli entered this season with a title drought of more than 30 years. The last, and only times, they won the title were in 1987 and 1990 when Diego Maradona played in the team.

The season started very well as they built a 15-unbeaten streak with an 11-match winning streak.

Osimben was one of the key components for this title campaign with 22 goals so far. As well, we have Khuicha Kvaratskhelia who shined in his first season with the team. He has 12 goals and 10 assists in the league.

Even with April being a very disappointing month for the club, only winning 2 out of 7 games played and being kicked out of the Champions League, the club managed to stay on track. With the result of today’s match they’ve gained a 16 points lead with still 5 games to play.
