Inter Miami 2023 Leagues Cup trophy celebration after Lionel Messi helped them win their first title in their first final

Inter Miami came into the tournament being one of the worst teams in the MLS losing 14 out of the 22 games played in the MLS Eastern Conference and only managed to win 5 games. Since the arrival of Lionel Messi things have changed for the club.

Miami started an unbeaten streak from the beginning of the Leagues Cup with Messi as their captain. Won all 7/7 games in the competition and scored 2 or more goals in each game except the final.

As was to expect, the big star was Messi, who scored 1 or more goals in each of the 7 games he has played for the club. He scored the opening goal of the final in the 23rd minute giving the lead to Inter. They managed to maintain this lead until Fafá Picault tied things in the 57th minute.

The match ended in a tie and it had to be resolved in a penalty shootout. Messi stroked first for Inter Miami and scored it with ease. The shootout continued and it wasn’t until the 10th round that things took a turn. Drake Callender, Inter’s goalkeeper, scored his penalty setting the score 10-9. Afterward came Elliot Panicco, Nashville’s goalkeeper, but his shot was stopped by Callender. This gave the victory to Inter Miami.

With his 10 goals with Miami, Lionel Messi became the most decorated in football history with 44 trophies passing Dani Alves.
