The Spanish legend came into the club in 2021 mid-season. He took a Barcelona that was out of the Champions League for the next season and brought them to the second place in the league table. The following season, 2022/23, even after falling to the Europa League and failing to win it, they managed to win LaLiga with 10 points more than Real Madrid. This trophy and glory earned him a contract extension which he signed in September 2023 until 2025 with the possibility of extending it one more year.

Xavi had announced in January that he would depart at the end of this season. The announcement came after Barcelona was undergoing difficult times and the pressure was building. Xavi Hernandez claimed that the position was affecting his mental health and that the pressure building into the players because of him wasn’t helping.

However, after this Barca went unbeaten for 13 games in a row in all competitions and the team’s overall performance went upwards. They even got to the Champions League quarterfinals and the Cules gained hopes of passing into the semifinals after winning the first leg against PSG.

Nonetheless, the past week ended on a down note for the club after losing to PSG 4-1 in the second leg and dropping out of the UCL, followed by El Clasico’s 3-2 defeat last Sunday. Even after this, the club wanted Xavi Hernandez to stay.

On Wednesday, Joan Laporta met with Xavi and the club’s directives. After the meeting, several sources confirmed the news, “Xavi was staying”. Today, the confirmation came from the club and Xavi himself.
