Barcelona’s referee scandal has just scale even further as UEFA have open their own investigation regarding the subject.

Barcelona are far from seeing an end to all the bad fame that has come their way after it was revealed that they used to make payments to a company run by a former vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee. Now the UEFA has opened their own investigation to confirm if they have violated their terms.

If found guilty, Barca could be facing expulsion from all UEFA’s competitions. This will mean no Champions League participation for the time they determine necessary.

What is know is that the Catalan team payed around 7 million euros to a company owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira between the 2001 and the 2018. Negreira was vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee from 1993 to 2018.

They are facing legal charges for corruption in the Spanish courts due to this same case. If found guilty by all this institutions Barca are going to be facing very big consequences.

The team has denied all the claims of wrong doing. They alleged that all they did was buy advise from this companies.

UEFA’s statement

“In accordance with article 31(4) of the UEFA disciplinary regulations, UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspectors have today been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework by FC Barcelona in connection with the so-called ‘Caso Negreira’.”
